Ballroom dancing, as we know it today, was primarily cultivated in England. Even though some of the dances come from South America, they were modernized and transformed into teachable styles in England.
Ballroom dances are now split between two categories: Standard Ballroom and Latin Ballroom. The Standard Dances are the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and the Quickstep. The Latin Dances are the Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and the Jive.
